What is Waste?



Waste comes in various types and forms and is generated through the disposal of unwanted materials. Waste is derived and collected from different sources and those evident within the County of Cumbria include:

• Household Waste;
• Commercial Waste;
• Construction and Demolition Waste;
• Industrial Waste;
• Clinical Waste;

This website primarily considers the collection, treatment, and disposal of municipal waste but describes aspects of the other types of waste where relevant.

Municipal waste includes household waste and any other waste collected by, or on behalf of, the local waste collection authority.

Household waste is produced at a rate of approximately 1 tonne per household per year and has the following typical composition:
